Engaging Multilateral Platforms: A Practical Toolkit for African Political Leadership

Download Toolkit

As the G20 shapes global decisions on economic governance, climate action, development finance, and digital transformation, its outcomes carry profound implications for Africa’s future. With the African Union (AU) now a permanent member of the G20, the opportunity for coordinated, strategic African influence has never been greater.

This Toolkit equips political leaders, parliamentary actors, party strategists, and government advisors with the knowledge, tools, and practical entry points needed to meaningfully influence G20 processes in support of Africa’s priorities.

Designed as both a strategic and practical guide, it demystifies the G20 architecture — from Sherpa and Finance Tracks to engagement groups and ministerial processes — and identifies where political leverage exists. It outlines how national actors can shape country positions before global negotiations, align party platforms with continental priorities, strengthen parliamentary oversight, and engage executive decision-makers effectively.

While this toolkit focuses specifically on climate engagement within the G20, it should not be read as limited to the G20 alone. Rather, the G20 is used as a practical entry point through which African political parties can explore, test, and strengthen approaches to engaging with complex multilateral governance processes.

Crucially, the Toolkit situates G20 engagement within broader multilateral platforms, particularly the African Union, and underscores the importance of alignment with Agenda 2063. By strengthening coordination between national actors and continental frameworks, political leaders can ensure that G20 outcomes advance Africa’s long-term development vision.

Africa’s permanent seat at the G20 is not symbolic — it is strategic. This Toolkit helps translate that position into measurable influence.
