Project Overview
The Protecting and Promoting Whistleblowing in South Africa (PPW) project is a 30-month initiative launched in February 2024. This collaborative project is implemented by Democracy Works Foundation, in partnership with The Whistleblower House. The PPW project focuses on strengthening support systems for whistleblowers in South Africa. The project is a direct response to the growing need for holistic protection, recognition, and advocacy for individuals who expose corruption and misconduct in both the public and private sectors in South Africa.
Objective and Aims
The project’s overall objective is to promote high moral and ethical standards of behaviour in the government and the private sector by supporting initiatives aimed at combating corruption. This is achieved through specific objectives, namely, to support, empower, and protect whistleblowers, and to promote the creation of a supportive policy, legal and social environment and government support for whistleblowers and human rights defenders.
Target Groups
Whistleblowers – Individuals who risk their safety and livelihoods to expose wrongdoing.
Legal, mental health, security and accommodation service providers – Professionals who form the backbone of whistleblower support systems.
Governments, civil society organisations, media, academia, businesses, and professional associations – Essential allies in changing public perception and driving reform.
Policy influencers and lawmakers – Key to creating robust legal protections and accountability mechanisms.
The project is co-funded by the European Union (EU) under the thematic programme on human rights and democracy. The EU is committed to promoting human rights, transparency, and democratic governance.
