Deepening Democratic Culture

Our Deepening Democratic Culture programme contributes to strengthening democratic practice and tradition.

In young democracies democratic practice is often not embedded in culture. Elements exist, historically, traditionally but are often not carried across cultures or populations. Investing in democratic culture must be seen as an activity that is always ongoing, that is never ‘finished’. Older democracies show us time and again how important it is to continue to invest in democratic culture.

Democracy Works Foundation believes that in order to strengthen democratic culture it is important to invest in critical thinking, dialogues and exchanges of ideas to foster freedom of speech and new ideas for democracy entrenchment. We believe it is equally important to provide platforms for the open exchange of ideas and to help build a culture of consensus and peaceful settlement of differences.
