Strengthening Climate Resilience Through Public-Private Collaboration

Climate change challenges socio-economic development and environmental sustainability, especially in vulnerable regions like the Witzenberg and Karoo Hoogland Municipalities. While both the public and private sectors play essential roles in advancing climate-resilient development, research highlights that “efforts are often disjointed, with limited collaboration and misaligned priorities.”

Key obstacles include bureaucratic barriers in municipal procurement, insufficient engagement with civil society and community-based organisations, and a lack of innovation in addressing climate risks.

Developed under the Climate for Growth (FIGCCC) project, Democracy Works Foundation (DWF), together with INSPIRE and KDS, has explored ways to improve engagement and coordination between the private sector (IPPs), the public sector, and civil society in tackling climate change.

This Recommendation Brief for Public Sector and Private Sector Stakeholders outlines strategies to bridge these gaps by fostering stronger partnerships, integrating climate resilience into development planning, streamlining procurement processes, and enhancing communication channels.

The Advocacy Brief for Civil Society and Community-Based Organisations outlines a roadmap for strengthening the role of CSOs and CBOs in local climate action. It focuses on building collaboration, reforming municipal processes, and strengthening capacity to ensure that community voices are heard and acted upon.

Read the Climate for Growth Report for in-depth insights on why climate change isn’t just an environmental issue but a key part of development planning, from infrastructure and water management to energy and agriculture. Climate action must be integrated into every development decision.

DWFs Climate for Growth project was made possible with co-funding from the European Union.
